Theodore Irving Gearhart

Theodore Irving Gearhart, 80, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on Wednesday, November 9, 2011, at Guardian Care in Roanoke Rapids.

He was born July 21, 1931 in Hemphill, WVa. and was raised by his Grandmother in Ironto, VA.  He was one of three brothers that grew up living a hard mountain life in the Appalachians of Virginia.  It was there that he gained his outstanding work ethic and lifelong love for the outdoors and enjoying hunting and fishing throughout the rest of his life.  He was employed by Asplundh tree service before joining the Air Force at an early age.  His time in the Air Force allowed him to travel and experience many different cultures across the globe.  He was a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.  He settled in Roanoke Rapids in the 1970’s and eventually retired from the Air Force as a Master Sergeant after 26 years of service.  He went on to operate the Thelma Service Center, Blank’s Mini Mart and The Beverage Saver.  He will be remembered by most for his great smile, quick wit, generosity, and great attitude towards life.  He loved his family, hunting, fishing, gardening, baseball, cooking for people, and having a good time with friends.

He is survived by his wife, Hilaria Gearhart of Roanoke Rapids; two sons, and their wives, Jeff Gearhart and Dena Blount Gearhart, of Ocean Springs, MS, and Frank Gearhart and Terry Metts Gearhart, of Chapin, SC, and three grandchildren, Samuel Gearhart of Ocean Springs, MS, and Shauna Gearhart, of Clemson, SC, and Kayla Gearhart, of Chapin, SC.  Also surviving is a special person, Clay Holt, who was like a son to Ted.

The family will receive friends, Sunday, November 13, 2011 from 5-7 pm at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Services 507 HWY 158 W, Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Funeral services will be held at St. John The Baptist Catholic Church, Monday, November 14, 2011 at 11:00 am.   Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery.

Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service is handling arrangements.
