Jane Hargrave Smith

Jane Hargrave Smith, age 58, died Sunday, January 8, 2012 after a valiant battle with cancer.

Jane was a lifelong educator, retiring after 29 years of service to middle schoolers in the Roanoke Rapids City Schools. She was an alumna of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and an avid Tar Heel fan. Jane was predeceased by her father, Walter Willis Hargrave, and her mother, Ingeborg Glöege Hargrave. Jane leaves behind to grieve her loss her husband, K. Wayne Smith; her children, Beth Bailey and Brian Smith (Amy); her brother, Dr. Ronald Hargrave (Fran); and step-daughter Parris Whitley (Dennis) and children, Sam, Kevin, and Jacob.  Jane's grandchildren, Jaden Bailey, Brynna Bailey, Savannah Smith, and Reed Smith, adored their NeNe and have wonderful memories to cherish. The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 11th, from 6pm until 8pm. A graveside service will follow at Cedarwood Cemetary on Thursday, January 12th at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Jane’s memory be made to the Relay for Life of Roanoke Valley.

Jane has one of the brightest minds and is one of the most modest and gentle souls I ever had the privilege of knowing in my career in education, or as a parent.

There is truly now a void for the many middle school children who will never again enjoy the magic of Jane Smith's expertise in the classroom.

She loved her own children beyond measure. What a proud mother! And her children should be so proud of their dear mother! She is and always will be a treasure.

To all of Jane's Family,
Jane and I were best friends in high school. I am so sorry for your loss. I'm sure she was a great educator, as she was so smart.
