Elizabeth "Betty" Davis Lawson Spruill

Elizabeth “Betty” Davis Lawson Spruill,  87, of 408 Starke Drive, Roanoke Rapids, died Tuesday, November 29, 2011, at Life Care Hospital in Rocky Mount.

Mrs. Spruill was a member of New Life Church of Christ, Widow’s Son’s Lodge, and OES Order of Eastern Star.  She volunteered at Lakeland where she was known as “The Popcorn Queen”. Betty volunteered with the Red Cross Blood Mobile for years and was a longtime blood donor giving 12 gallons during her life.  She also served as a registrar at the local election polls for years. She has now completed her goal of meeting Jesus Christ face to face.

She was born March 11, 1924, to the late Whitney Egerton Davis and Pearl Lenis Anglea Davis. She was also predeceased by  her husband,  J. Donald Lawson, son-in-law, Melvin Everett Powell, Sr. and  a grandson, Melvin Everett Powell, Jr., daughter-in-law, Deborah Jo Lawson and a special friend Nadine Ray Eldridge.

She is survived by her children:   Pearl Lawson Powell, of Roanoke Rapids  Joe Lawson and wife, Nancy, of Lenoir City, Tennessee;  John Lawson of Fairfield, Ohio, and Christopher Lawson and wife, Tammy, of Rocky Mount; her brothers: Leland Davis and wife, Marilyn, of Kingsport, Tennessee, and Jack Davis and wife, Connie, of Weaverville, N. C.; her grandchildren:  Saundra Hill and husband Mike, Renee Powell, Daniel Lawson and wife Aleeza, Doresa Mathews and husband Joe, Victoria Lawson, Jason Lawson, Whitney Jo Lawson; great-grandchildren: Kimberly Brower and husband Mike, Joey Hill, Stella Rose Lawson, Thomas Mathews, Kiarra Mathews, Kayley Mathews; great-great-grandchild: Jared Brower; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service on Monday, December 5, 2011   at 7:00 P.M. with Billy Meinsen, minister, officiating. The  family will receive friends following the service, and other times at the home.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A. M., Wednesday, December 7, 2011  at Glencoe Cemetery in Big Stone Gap, Virginia with Greg Townsend, Minister officiating.

Memorials may be made to New Life Church of Christ Building Fund, 1718 East 10th Street, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870, your church or your choice.
